Lawn Maintenance

How to keep your lawn green and healthy all year round without spending too much

Maintaining a lawn in perfect condition throughout the twelve months of the year requires understanding how the key factors interact: soil texture, pH, irrigation pattern, mowing frequency, and seasonal fertilization. When one of these factors is out of balance, the result can be a yellow lawn, covered in moss, or invaded by weeds within weeks.

In this guide, we explain the seasonal routine followed by professional gardeners: the most common mistakes made by garden owners (such as watering at noon or cutting the lawn too short in summer), and the keys to reducing water consumption by up to 40% with small adjustments to the irrigation schedule.

We will also see how to correctly interpret the visual appearance of the lawn as an indicator of health, what to do when yellow spots or dry areas appear suddenly, and why the mowing height varies by season to protect the roots from heat or cold.

Best Robotic Lawn Mower in 2026: Honest Comparison of Models and Leading Brands

The market for robotic lawn mowers has evolved significantly in recent years. Today there are three major product families — perimeter-wired robots, GPS wireless robots, and differential traction robots with cameras — with significant differences in price, performance, and maintenance that it is advisable to understand well before making any purchasing decision.

In this comparison, we have analyzed over 20 models available in the Spanish market, evaluating their actual cutting capacity in gardens of different sizes and topographies, their battery autonomy, navigation precision, and the cost of annual maintenance. We have also collected the experience of professional gardeners who work with these devices daily in residential installations and communities.

If you have a garden up to 400 m², perimeter-wired robots are sufficient and economical. If your plot exceeds that surface, has steep slopes or irregular shapes, a GPS or camera robot amortizes its additional cost in two or three seasons. We explain exactly when each type is worth it.

Soil and Nutrients

Soil pH Control: Everything You Need to Know for Your Plants to Absorb Nutrients Correctly

Soil pH is the most important parameter of garden chemistry and, paradoxically, the most neglected. An incorrect pH not only hinders plant growth: it also blocks the absorption of essential nutrients even if they are physically present in the soil, favors the proliferation of fungi and pathogenic bacteria, and deteriorates the substrate structure in the long term.

In this comprehensive guide, we explain exactly what soil pH is, how to measure it correctly (the difference between pH test strips and digital meters can be decisive for the diagnosis), what is the ideal range for each type of plant, why it rises or falls depending on the type of substrate and the products you use, and how to correct it step by step without risking root burn.

We also address the critical relationship between pH and the availability of iron, manganese, and zinc, why chlorosis is almost always a pH problem and not a lack of iron, and how to maintain soil stability throughout the season with preventive amendments and periodic analysis.

Pests and control

How to eliminate weeds from the garden definitively without using aggressive herbicides

Weeds are one of the most persistent problems at the start of the season or after periods of heavy rain. The cause is almost always the same: bare soil without mulch that allows weed seeds to germinate easily. Invasive grasses and broadleaf weeds take advantage of that window to root and compete with cultivated plants.

The correct solution is not to apply herbicides in mass. The sequence is: manually hoe when the soil is moist (the roots come out whole), apply a generous layer of organic mulch (5–8 cm), and if necessary, use a selective herbicide only in specific areas of the lawn. In most cases, the garden is free of weeds in less than two weeks.

Start of season

Prepare the garden for spring: the complete guide to start the season without problems

Preparing the garden correctly at the start of spring makes the difference between a splendid flowering season and months of sick plants and weeds. The order matters: first check the soil condition and perform a pH analysis, then do the winter pruning, fertilize the base and adjust the watering schedule before making the first seasonal planting.

A common mistake is over-fertilizing at the start of spring without knowing the actual state of the soil. Without prior analysis, you can add nutrients that are already present in excess, acidify the soil, or burn the roots of newly sprouted plants. This guide takes you step by step through the entire preparation process so that the first weeks of the season are the most productive.

Legislation & permits

Regulations

Everything you need to know about permits, municipal ordinances and legal restrictions for the care and modification of your private garden.

See full regulations →
N1

Tree pruning: when you need a municipal permit

Pruning trees on public roads or protected species requires authorization from the city council. In a private garden, a permit may also be required if the tree exceeds a certain trunk diameter or is listed.

Regulations →
N2

Burning plant waste: allowed and prohibited zones

Burning plant remains is prohibited in most autonomous communities except for agricultural exceptions with authorization. Summer months have a total ban across Spain due to fire risk.

Regulations →
N3

Watering restrictions during drought periods

During declared drought periods, city councils can restrict garden watering to certain time slots (usually night or early morning) and prohibit filling pools.

Regulations →
N4

Herbicides: official registration and responsible use

Only herbicides with a MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture) registration number may be used. Total-selective herbicides with glyphosate have been restricted in urban areas since 2019 by many municipalities.

Regulations →
N5

Machinery noise (lawn mower, brush cutter): allowed hours

Frequently asked questions

The most common doubts about garden maintenance and plants

Direct answers from our landscaper.

How often should I fertilize the garden?

For a standard ornamental garden, the application of organic fertilizer (compost or worm castings) is done twice a year: at the beginning of spring and at the end of autumn. The top dressing mineral fertilizer can be applied monthly during the growing season (March–September), adjusting the dose according to the type of plant and the results of the soil analysis.

When is the best time to prune shrubs and hedges?

Maintenance or shaping pruning of most shrubs is done at the end of winter (February–March), before budding. Shrubs that bloom in spring (forsythia, kolkwitzia, weigela) are pruned just after flowering to avoid removing future flower buds. Perennial leaf hedges are pruned in spring and at the end of summer to maintain shape without exposing the cuts to cold.

Why are the leaves of my plants turning yellow?

Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) has several possible causes: inappropriate soil pH that blocks the absorption of iron or magnesium, lack of watering, excessive watering (which causes root asphyxiation), nitrogen deficiency, or red spider mite attack. First measure the soil pH (ideal range 6.0–7.0) and observe whether the yellowing starts from the youngest leaves (iron/pH problem) or the oldest ones (nitrogen deficiency).

When should I reseed or renovate the lawn?

Lawn seeding is done in autumn (September–October) or in spring (March–April) when soil temperatures are between 10 and 2,000 °C. Autumn is the preferred time in the Spanish climate: the soil is still warm, rainfall reduces the need for watering, and the lawn has the entire winter to root without the stress of summer heat.

To what height should I cut the lawn in summer?

In summer, the mowing height of the lawn should be higher than in spring and autumn. The general rule is not to cut more than the top third of the leaf in each cut. For most ornamental lawn varieties in summer, the optimal height is 5–7 cm. A too low cut during the height of summer exposes the soil to the sun, promotes evaporation, and stresses the roots, causing yellow or brown spots.

Is it normal for the garden to have weeds every year?

Yes, it is completely normal. The seed bank in the soil may contain thousands of weed seeds per square meter that germinate as soon as they find the right light, moisture, and temperature. The most effective long-term strategy is not to remove them one by one, but to deprive them of light with a dense layer of mulch (5–8 cm) and maintain the garden with dense vegetation to prevent the soil from being exposed where they germinate.
