Chicken coop step by step: measures, materials and the costly mistakes

Minimum space requirements: why they matter

The most common coop mistake is underestimating how much space chickens actually need. The minimum standard that most experienced keepers recommend is 1 m² of enclosed sleeping space per bird, plus 3–4 m² of outdoor run per bird. These are genuine minimums, not comfortable targets — below these figures, you will see stress, feather pecking, competition at feeders and drinkers, and a measurable drop in egg production. If you are planning a coop for four hens today and have any chance of expanding to six in the future, size the coop for six now. Building larger at the start costs almost nothing compared to rebuilding later.

Different breeds have different space needs within these broad guidelines. Active, nervous breeds like the Leghorn or Araucana need substantially more run space than a calm dual-purpose breed like the Sussex or Plymouth Rock. Heavy breeds with less inclination to fly or pace are better suited to a more compact setup. The sleeping space itself should be sized so every bird can access a perch simultaneously without crowding — plan for approximately 25–30 cm of perch length per bird. If any hen is unable to perch, she will sleep on the floor in contact with droppings, which significantly increases her risk of disease.

Ventilation: the most expensive mistake to fix

Poor ventilation is the most widespread structural mistake in backyard chicken coops, and it causes more disease and mortality than almost any other factor. A closed, poorly ventilated coop accumulates two harmful substances overnight: ammonia from droppings (which damages respiratory tissue and suppresses immunity) and excess moisture from the birds' own breathing and droppings (which promotes fungal growth, mite populations, and bacterial multiplication). The test is simple: if you can smell ammonia strongly when you open the coop door in the morning, ventilation is inadequate.

Effective ventilation means fresh air moving through the upper portion of the coop and exiting through openings on the opposite wall, above the level where the birds sleep. This creates airflow that removes ammonia and moisture without blowing directly over the birds at perch height — cross-draughts at bird level cause cold stress even in mild climates and are strongly associated with respiratory disease flare-ups. Ventilation openings should be covered with secure wire mesh to prevent predator entry. The opening area should be generous — many prefabricated coops significantly undersize ventilation, and adding additional mesh-covered vents is one of the most valuable improvements you can make to any existing structure.

Nesting boxes, perches, and interior layout

Nesting boxes serve one specific purpose: providing a dark, enclosed, comfortable space where hens feel secure enough to lay. One nesting box per every four to five hens is sufficient — hens often share boxes and rarely all lay simultaneously. The boxes should be positioned in the darkest corner of the coop, as far from windows as practical; direct light discourages laying because hens seek dim, sheltered conditions when selecting a nest site. The interior dimensions of each box should be approximately 30 cm wide by 30 cm deep by 30 cm tall — large enough for a comfortable hen but not so large that several birds can enter and contaminate the nest simultaneously.

Perches must always be positioned higher than nesting boxes. If a perch is at the same height as or lower than a nesting box, hens will choose the nesting box as their sleeping spot — which dirties the nest with overnight droppings and forces you to clean bedding constantly. Position perches at 60–80 cm from the floor, with nesting boxes installed lower and to the side. Use solid round or oval wood at least 4–5 cm in diameter so hens can grip comfortably without strain on their feet. Avoid sharp-edged materials that cause bumblefoot, and avoid materials treated with chemical preservatives that could harm birds.

Materials, roof design, and predator-proofing

The most durable coop materials for the Spanish climate are pressure-treated timber (properly dried and sealed), galvanised metal, and concrete block for permanent structures. Untreated softwood is common in budget prefabricated coops but rots quickly in wet climates and within a year or two begins to harbour parasites in deteriorating surfaces. If buying a prefabricated coop, check that the wood is at least 15 mm thick for walls and look for proper tongue-and-groove or overlapping plank construction that does not leave gaps where moisture, mites, and cold air can enter.

The roof must have an overhang of at least 20 cm on all sides to prevent rain from running down the walls and entering through gaps at the wall-roof junction. A flat roof without overhang will funnel water directly into the coop during heavy rain. Wire for the run should be welded mesh rather than chicken wire: chicken wire keeps chickens in but does not stop a determined fox, marten, or large rat from chewing or forcing through it. Use at least 19-gauge welded wire mesh with holes no larger than 2.5 cm, and bury the bottom edge of any run perimeter wire at least 30 cm underground or bend it outward along the ground to prevent digging predators from getting underneath.

Common expensive mistakes to avoid

Beyond ventilation, the most costly mistakes in coop design share a common thread: they seem unimportant until they cause a problem, at which point fixing them retroactively costs far more than getting them right from the start. A dirt floor that is not managed properly becomes a mud patch within a season — it harbours parasites, stays permanently damp, and makes cleaning difficult. Either install a solid floor with a generous bedding layer or use compacted gravel topped with deep bedding. A roof without adequate slope sheds water poorly and can collapse under snow load in mountain regions; ensure any roof has a minimum slope of 15 degrees.

Not installing an automatic door is a mistake that is eventually guaranteed to be expensive. Foxes, martens, and rats are almost entirely nocturnal, and the risk of predator attack concentrates entirely in the hours between dusk and dawn. An automatic light-sensor door closer costing 30–60 euros closes the coop reliably every evening regardless of your schedule, illness, holidays, or simply forgetting. Every experienced keeper can tell you the date they lost their first bird to a predator while the coop was open at night, and every one of them installed an automatic door shortly afterwards. Install it before the first bird moves in, not after the first loss.

Key tips for building or buying a chicken coop

  • Size the sleeping area for at least 1 m² per bird and the run for at least 3–4 m² per bird — if space allows, build larger than you need today to accommodate future expansion.
  • Never compromise on ventilation: add mesh-covered vents if your coop feels stuffy or smells of ammonia in the morning, even if the structure is otherwise sound.
  • Position perches always higher than nesting boxes — this single detail prevents the most common coop hygiene problem beginners encounter.
  • Use welded mesh rather than chicken wire for the run and bury or fold the perimeter edge outward underground to stop digging predators.
  • Install an automatic door opener before the first night with birds in the coop — not after a predator incident makes it feel urgent.
  • Check that any prefabricated coop has a properly overhanging roof, walls thicker than 12 mm, and genuine ventilation openings before buying at a low price.
